Everything you need to know about the B.Tech programmes at IISc Bangalore
Admissions & Eligibility
Admission to all B.Tech programmes at IISc is conducted exclusively through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). No separate application needs to be submitted on the IISc admission portal. Candidates must:
- Register on the official JoSAA online portal
- Fill in choices for IISc B.Tech programmes during the choice filling/locking period
- Participate in the counselling and seat allocation process as per JoSAA schedule
Candidates must satisfy the eligibility requirements, including performance in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination, as prescribed in the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) Business Rules for admission to IITs, applicable for the relevant academic year. Additionally, candidates must have a valid JEE Advanced score.
No. IISc does not conduct a separate entrance exam for B.Tech admissions. Admission is purely based on JEE Advanced rank through the JoSAA counselling process. Candidates simply need to choose IISc programmes during the JoSAA choice-filling stage.
Admission is strictly based on JoSAA counselling and seat allocation, subject to fulfillment of eligibility conditions as notified by JoSAA for the respective academic year. Seats are allotted based on JEE Advanced ranks and the candidate's choice preferences.
Yes! During the JoSAA choice-filling period, you can select multiple IISc B.Tech programmes and rank them according to your preference. Seat allocation will be done based on your JEE Advanced rank and the order of your choices.
Programmes Offered
IISc currently offers four B.Tech programmes:
- Mathematics and Computing — offered since Academic Year 2022–23
- Aerospace Engineering — new from Academic Year 2026–27
- Mechanics and Computing — new from Academic Year 2026–27
- Materials Science and Engineering — new from Academic Year 2026–27

The B.Tech programme at IISc is a 4-year (8 semesters) undergraduate programme. The programme is structured to provide a balanced curriculum with core courses, soft-core/elective courses, humanities, and project/research opportunities in the final year.
The B.Tech curriculum is comprehensive and includes:
- Core Courses: Algorithms and Programming, Analysis and Linear Algebra, Data Structures & Algorithms, Probability and Statistics, AI/ML, and more
- Breadth Soft Core: Introductory courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences to provide a multidisciplinary foundation
- Humanities: Courses offered throughout the programme to develop well-rounded graduates
- Electives / Soft Core: Specialised courses in semesters 5–8 enabling depth in chosen areas
- Project / ISP: Independent Study/Research Experience Projects and industry projects in semesters 7–8
Yes! B.Tech students have significant research opportunities, especially in their 7th and 8th semesters. Options include:
- Independent Study/Research Experience Project (ISP) — 6 credits in Semester 7
- ISP-II or a full Research/Industry Project — 6 to 12 credits in Semester 8
- Projects can be done at IISc under faculty guidance or at external organisations (academia or industry)
The evaluation involves midterm reports, final reports, and presentations to a committee.
Fees & Financial Support
The annual fee structure is as follows:
- Gen/OBC/EWS Category: ₹2,20,800 (includes Tuition Fee of ₹2,00,000 plus other charges)
- SC/ST/PwD Category: ₹20,800 (Tuition Fee is fully waived)
This includes Tuition Fee, Gymkhana Fee (₹1,800), Other Academic Fees (₹3,700), Statutory Deposit (₹7,500 — refundable, first year only), Library Deposit (₹7,500 — refundable, first year only), and Students Emergency Fund (₹300).
Yes, fees can be paid in three installments:
- Instalment I: 35% of the total fee
- Instalment II: 35% of the total fee
- Instalment III: 30% of the total fee
Due dates for each instalment will be notified in due course.
Yes. The Tuition Fee of ₹2,00,000 is fully waived for students belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories. They only need to pay ₹20,800 annually, which covers Gymkhana Fee, Other Academic Fees, deposits, and the emergency fund.

Academics & Curriculum
The credit system varies across semesters, and the credits in each semester can vary with the program, to balance workload:
- Semester 1: ~18 credits
- Semester 2: 17–20 credits
- Semester 3: 15–18 credits
- Semesters 4 & 5: 16–19 credits
- Semester 6: 15–19 credits
- Semesters 7 & 8: 12–16 credits
The credit notation (e.g., 3:1) indicates lecture credits to lab credits.
IISc follows a letter-grade system with grades ranging from A to F. The minimum pass grade for courses and projects is D. The CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is computed on a scale and is used for academic standing, fellowship eligibility, and project eligibility.
Yes, humanities courses are integrated throughout the B.Tech programme, offered from Semester 1 through Semester 6. These courses are designed to ensure that students develop strong communication skills, critical thinking, and a well-rounded perspective alongside their technical education.
In the first few semesters, students choose from breadth soft-core courses spanning Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, and Materials Science. For example, in Semester 1, students choose 2 out of 3 courses (Introductory Biology I, Introductory Chemistry I, Introductory Physics I). This multidisciplinary approach ensures that B.Tech students have a broad scientific foundation.
ISP is an Independent Study/Research Experience Project that B.Tech students can undertake in Semesters 7 and 8. Key details:
- ISP-I in Semester 7 is worth 6 credits
- ISP-II or a full Research/Industry Project (12 credits) can be taken in Semester 8
- CGPA and other requirements for ISPs can vary with the program. Please refer to the specific program's course structure for detailed requirements.
- At most one ISP/Project can be done outside the institute (academia or industry)
- Evaluation includes midterm report, final report, and presentation (Advisor 70%, Committee 30%)
